A Six-Week Course with 2027 Winter Resident Potter Ester Kwon

What happens when a wheel-thrown pot refuses to stay perfectly round?

Join visiting Brooklyn potter Ester Kwon for a six-week exploration of form, function and creative possibility. Designed for potters with established wheel skills, this course will help you move beyond symmetry and discover new ways to bring personality, movement and intention into your work.

Ester is an instructor and the studio manager at Gasworks NYC, a vibrant community ceramics studio in Brooklyn, New York. She has taught students of all ages how to strengthen their throwing and handbuilding skills—and, most importantly, how to bring these two approaches together to create distinctive and deeply personal forms.

As eARTh Studios’ 2027 Winter Resident Potter, Ester brings her particular interest in cookware, ceramics for the kitchen and the cultural traditions that surround handmade objects in everyday life.

Throughout the course, Ester will introduce techniques including:

• Throwing off the hump
• Altering freshly thrown forms
• Darting to reshape volume and silhouette
• Combining wheel-thrown and handbuilt components
• Developing functional forms with greater visual character

This is more than a technical wheel class. It is an invitation to experiment, loosen familiar habits and explore how a pot can be transformed through touch, alteration and imagination.

Participants must be comfortable with wedging, centering, pulling walls and trimming.
