Course Description:

We offer Weekend Beginner and Intermediate Throwdowns

Beginner:

For the beginner this weekend workshop is designed to instill confidence in learning how to make your own dishes on the pottery wheel. Demonstrations include: centering, raising walls, making rims and lids, throwing wide bowls, and pulling handles for cups, vases and jars. Stain, slip and glaze introduction to surface design.

  • Gain knowledge of the historical development of wheel thrown pottery and techniques.
  • Develop the ability to throw pots on the wheel.
  • Show consistent progress throughout the workshop sessions by throwing more challenging forms.
  • Develop the ability to select and use appropriate pottery tools.
  • Develop the ability to assess one’s work.
  • Learn about current potters and pottery trends.

Intermediate:

For the intermediate this weekend workshop is for the potter who would like to extend their skills on the wheel. Demonstrations include: making lids of different shapes and sizes, knobs, lugs and handles, throwing taller and taller forms, teapots and cover topics including throwing on bats, and developing a series in your personal style. Surface design techniques, glazes and transfer design techniques will be introduced and expanded upon.

  • Refine your throwing skills and teach advanced techniques for making functional tableware on the potter’s wheel.  
  • Show consistent progress throughout the workshop sessions by throwing more challenging forms.
  • Explore surface design techniques: slip stencils, design. bases.
  • Understand the process of throwing a series of cups and bowls on the wheel using your personal form and style.
  • Gain knowledge of the historical development of wheel thrown pottery and techniques.
  • Develop the ability to select and use appropriate pottery tools.
  • Develop the ability to assess and critique one’s work.

All work is made in a weekend. A glaze extravaganza will occur two weeks later.

Course Fees:

$295 for workshop + $35 per bag of clay + taxes (Glazes and firing included in first bag of clay for free.)

The weekend goes 10-4 pm with demos.
